Avast or AVG and why?

The subject says it all. Which one do you prefer Avast or AVG and why? I get these questions and I am a happy AVG user (um, when I am using Windows) and would like to know if there are any advantages to using avast. I have heard that you need to reregister every 60 days and wonder if this is true? Thanks.

well, if you would have asked this about half a year ago or so i would have said AVG. now however i've been switching to avast. I've found that it is lighter on system resourses, and finds a lot more stuff as wel. As for registering every 60 days, that's not true, it's yearly if i remember right. the 60 days is the time the program gives you to register for the first time i do believe.

Yes this is true. You have 60 days after installation to register it and then you get another year.
Unfortunately the registration page of it has a captcha but with the web visum pluggin for firefox www.webvisum.com we can register with no problems.
I agree with the previous post avg 7.5 was the most accessible antivirus but i can't say the same with avg8 so i swiched to avast. Plus avg 8 seams to make my computer slower and other people in the avg forum said the same.
Also when i read reviews they list avg last with avira first and avast second.
Something i don't like about avast is the fact that it doesn't offer automatic scan and we have to do it automatically and also that we have to go in the options and dissable the skims to make it accessible but after doing that the program works really well even with NVDA.

Sorry i ment that we have to scan manually not automatically. This is what happens when we don't read through lol.

I bought Nod32, but if I were choosing a free AV today, I would go with Avast. One really cool thing about it is the ability to associate sound files with events. The one for update notifications is annoying and I turn that one off, but it's really cool for example, to have a red alert sound play when a virus is encountered.

if you don't register the program will it let you un install it? The reason I ask this, is i downloaded avast pro from a torrent thinking it would come already registered and it didn't. So, will I be able to uninstall the pro and install the free version?

I prefur avast for the same reasons listed above.

Avast or AVG and why?

Avira, because you didn't mention it.

It is also much better than AVG or Avast. Detects more malware, and has a better algorithm for detecting things it thinks might be trojans viruses or the like. Combine that with threatfire and you are set.

I just got Avast, and I like it.! I used to use AVG, but since it moved up to 8.0, it has been much less accessible (or at least I couldn't figure out how to use it easily with any screenreaders I use). But after downloading Avast just yesterday, it had already caught 2 Trojans and an adware, which I would have never known about with AVG. With Avast, I can again scan and read the results independently. If AVG had stayed as accessible as it was in 7.5, I wouldn't stayed with it, but now Avast has been working fine for me.

cody, i've said before, threatfire crashes vista. and who's going off topic now?

So after all of the talk I switched to avast. It seems though to be a little bit on the not accessible side. When finishing a scan how do I see the results? Also does it clean the viruses and everything as it goes? Let me know.

With regards to rat. it crashes vista because you probably don't know how to use it and did not allow a certain service. But, again, what does crash vista is what I'd like to know, but this isn't about vista here. So quit trying to push it please thank you.

I fixed avast and it is working so far. we will see.

I use avast and it's OK. At least it alerts you to things by sounds, but AVG just did nothing.

I am thinking of getting avast once my subscription to norten finishes, so I take it it's accessible? Hmmmm, seems interesting, I am going to check it out.

I think I'll have to try AVAST. Sounds very nice.

Avira all the way. The free edition is great and accessible, once you realize you have to go through the menus (think under file, scanner), choose the configuration/scan you wnt from the list box and hit f6 to start the scan, Luke Filewalker comes up and you can see everything taht's going on. It also alerts you of hijacking attempts, you get a pop up dialog box where you tab, check the appropriate box that indicates what you want to do with the file (delete, move to quarentine, leave it alone etc) then tab and hit ok. Combine that with Super AntiSpyware or Malbits Anti Malware has been a winning combination for me. I had a pretty heavy duty virus attack that AVG did nothing to prevent and the only software I could install was Avira and Super Anti Spyware, between runnig those two 3 times and disabling my System Restore point I got rid of the virus and 300 spyware apps.
And, best of all, both are free (with free you got to run the scans manually, you can't schedule them, but that's not hard to do).
cheers

Thanks, post 17. Further more, Avira is the only known AV that detects and removes the sapi infection. To rid yourself of spyware it is recommended by me and others to update your hosts file, which blocks ad sites which is where most of the crap comes from. blocks 14509 of them actually. Traps anything from getting out and prevents anything from getting in, if a request from a blocked site is detected. however I think this link is a good read for those who would like to be informed about are dear buddies at MS. Seems as if Billy G pulled a fast one and now am realizing it.

Think you deleted those emails and IE cache for good. Think again, and it only got worse with vista. Windows 7 for the wins. Windows Vista for the LOL's
